The Environment Act 2021 operates as the UK's new guide for environmental protection. It enforces an approach known as Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
BNG makes sure that biodiversity is left in a better state than before work took place.
Most major developments must now deliver a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain over and above any existing habitats on site (subject to certain exceptions).
