The Environment Act 2021 operates as the UK's new guide for environmental protection. It enforces an approach known as Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
Most major developments must now:
- deliver a minimum 10% biodiversity net gain over and above any existing habitats on site
Types of developments subject to BNG
- residential developments with 10 or more dwellings, or
- site areas greater than 0.5 hectares
BNG ensures that biodiversity is left in a better state than before work took place.
