Driveway markings (H bar)

H‑bar markings are white lines painted across a dropped kerb. They are sometimes used to show where a driveway entrance may be.

We no longer install H‑bar markings. This is because they are advisory only and do not create a parking restriction.

Parking enforcement is based on whether a vehicle is blocking a dropped kerb, not whether an H‑bar marking is present.

A Penalty Charge Notice may be issued if a vehicle is parked across a dropped kerb and prevents access. This applies whether or not an H‑bar marking is in place.

When deciding if access is blocked, we look at whether any part of the vehicle is parked on the dropped kerb. This includes situations where even a small part of the vehicle extends beyond the start of the lowered kerb.
