Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3

Grant Funding

We have been awarded £3.48m through the government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3. The council will match fund this amount, to bring the overall value up to c.£7m.

The Project

We have secured this funding in order to install ground source heat pumps in 231 of our flats- with these being located in the Balmoral tower blocks: Brecon, Blackdown, and Grampian. This exciting project will significantly reduce resident energy costs, reduce carbon emissions, and improve the energy efficiency of our housing stock.

Ground source heat pumps use ambient heat from the ground to provide a low-carbon, energy efficient way to heat homes and supply hot water. This will help tenants by significantly lowering their energy bills, while also supporting the city’s climate goals and the council’s Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards requirements.

Outcomes

The main goal of this project is reducing energy bills for residents. Energy bills are expected to reduce by at least 50% after the installation of the ground source heat pumps.

We will be using AICO gateways on the project in order to independently evaluate energy use falling before and after installation. We have used these devices on previous projects to good effect.

Thurrock Council carried out a similar project previously. More details on their project and resident testimonials can be found on the Kensa website: Chadwell St Mary's, Thurrock Council - Ground Source Heat Pumps Project | Kensa.

Timelines

We are currently in the design phase of the project. We are hoping to be on site in early 2026, with works taking approximately 24 months following this.
