By signing the Climate Change Act 2008 in November 2008, the Government indicated its aim to create a low-carbon economy and to tackle the growing global threat of climate change.
This Act means that the UK must decrease its overall carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 and by at least 80% by 2050 (based on 1990 carbon emission levels). It also:
- encourages energy efficiency
- encourages the development of renewable energy
- aims to secure a low carbon energy supply for the UK.
We are also taking steps to help tackle climate change at a local level. We have shown this by signing the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change in 2008.
