His Royal Highness Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh

The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Cllr John Lamb, says: “We join the rest of the nation in expressing our very great sadness at the announcement today that His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, has sadly passed away at the age of 99. The Royal Family have confirmed he died peacefully at Windsor Castle today (9 April 2021).

“As a mark of respect, flags on our civic buildings and in our parks have been flown at half-mast from 12.30pm, 9 April 2021.

“An official Book of Condolence is available for all local people to sign online www.royal.uk.

“We will make further announcements about any local arrangements to mark this very sad news in due course."

The Mayor, Councillor John Lamb, has also written on behalf of the Southend-on-Sea borough to the Private Secretary to the Duke of Edinburgh to express condolences to Her Majesty and other members of the Royal Family.

Funeral arrangements

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Funeral will take place on Saturday 17 April 2021 at 3pm in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. The Funeral Service will begin with a National Minute’s Silence at three o’clock. The service will be preceded by a ceremonial procession inside the grounds of Windsor Castle. The funeral will be broadcast on TV and radio.
