Better Queensway: small changes, long term benefits

Every improvement, from safer crossings to greener streets, is designed to make Queensway a better place to live, visit, and move through - both today and in the future.

This project isn't just about roads and buildings; it's about building civic pride and creating a place the whole community can feel proud of. We recognise that while these works may cause some disruption, they are essential steps toward delivering lasting benefits for everyone who lives, works, and travels through the area.

Better Queensway at a glance

Here's what Better Queensway is working to achieve:

Safer streets for everyone

Designing streets with safer crossings, clearer layouts, and better visibility can significantly reduce collisions involving pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Schemes that prioritise safer walking and cycling have been shown to reduce road injuries while making people feel more confident using local streets.

Better Queensway includes redesigned crossings, improved pavements, and safer routes that help people of all ages move around more safely.

Sustainable drainage that can reduce flood risk by up to 40%

Heavy rainfall is becoming more common. Sustainable drainage systems such as permeable surfaces and landscaped areas help absorb and slow down rainwater instead of overwhelming drains.

By introducing sustainable drainage, Better Queensway will help lower surface water flood risk and make the area more resilient during extreme weather events.

Green spaces that improve health and wellbeing

People living near greener streets and public spaces are more likely to stay active and report better mental wellbeing. Even small increases in tree cover and planting can improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and make neighbourhoods feel more welcoming.

Better Queensway will introduce greener streets and improved public spaces to support healthier, more pleasant surroundings.

Walkable neighbourhoods to support local businesses

Areas that are easier and safer to walk around tend to see higher footfall for local shops and services. Research shows that well-designed, mixed-use neighbourhoods can increase local economic activity and support small businesses.

Better Queensway is focused on improving access to shops, services, and local amenities, helping the local economy while making everyday trips easier.

Better walking and cycling routes that can reduce congestion

When streets are designed to support walking and cycling, more short journeys are made without a car. This can reduce traffic congestion and make roads work better for those who need to drive.

By improving routes for walking and cycling alongside better road layouts, Better Queensway aims to support smoother journeys for everyone.

Building the foundations with infrastructure improvements first

Before new homes or buildings can be delivered, essential infrastructure such as roads, drainage, and public spaces must be in place. That is why the first phase of Better Queensway focuses on highways and safety improvements.

These early changes benefit residents now and prepare the area for future regeneration in a planned and responsible way.
