About the project
The Better Queensway project is an important plan to improve part of Southend-on-Sea. It will build around 1,600 new homes and make the roads safer and easier to use. This includes:
- making some roads smaller
- adding new places to cross
- adding cycle paths
Taylor Woodrow has been chosen to carry out the roadworks. Lambert Smith Hampton is looking at the housing plans to see if they still work well with new rules and building costs.
The aim is to create a welcoming area with green spaces where people of all ages can:
- live
- meet friends
- enjoy outdoor activities
We took full ownership of the project when Sanctuary/Swan Housing Association left.
We now fully own Porters Place LLP. The company set up to lead the project.
We are looking at different ways to move forward. These include:
- becoming the developer ourselves and hiring builders to do the work
- finding a new partner to continue with the current plan, using the same company
- Creating a new plan that still puts local people first
We are taking time to think carefully about the best option. But we are still fully committed to improving this area for the community and the city.
We will share our findings and suggest a way forward at a future Cabinet meeting.
