Petroleum

Petrol is highly flammable, explosive and toxic and there are laws that must be followed when it is being stored.

Southend Trading Standards Service is the licensing authority for the storage of petroleum spirit in the city. A licence is required in order to ensure that those keeping and dispensing petroleum spirit, do so in a safe manner that is unlikely to cause risk to the public or environment.

A Petrol Storage Certificate will be required and will be issued to the premises where the petrol is stored and dispensed, with no reference to person or company name.

Certificates do not have an expiry date and remain in force until either major changes take place or the site ceases to operate for more than 12 months.

Fees are payable each year and are set dependent on the quantity stored, but some quantities do not require a certificate.

For further information please contact Citizens Advice who will redirect the enquiry to the relevant Trading Standards Officer.
