Trading Standards

Product Safety

One of the most important areas of responsibility for Trading Standards Officers is product safety.

The law states that all new and second hand goods must be safe and the manufacturer, importer or supplier should not place any product on the market unless it is safe.

Trading Standards Officers will advise on and enforce a wide range of laws designed to ensure the safety of consumer goods and products and the protection of consumers in the City of Southend.

If officers suspect that unsafe goods are being sold, they have powers that enable them to:

  • enter and inspect premises and collect evidence
  • take other agencies along (Police, HMRC) to assist in inspection or investigation

If you are a consumer or a business and you believe you have been sold unsafe good, please call Citizens Advice.

For all consumer and complaints, enquiries and advice, please call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06 or visit website.
