Purpose of this guidance
Travel plans play a major role in reducing traffic and increasing accessibility for all. This will contribute to local and regional targets in line with national policy.
We need to make sure that all travel plans produced in the city are consistent in terms of
- structure
- content
- approach
This guidance aims to provide a plan to ensure quality while remaining flexible enough to adapt to site-specific conditions.
We also recognise that the best practice and requirements change over time. As a result, this guidance will be reviewed as and when required.
Travel plan policy landscape
The effects of the unsustainable way we regularly travel can be clearly seen on:
- the environment
- our health
- our quality of life
Our towns are becoming increasingly congested, with increased levels of car traffic. Travel plans are an important part of the Government's policies on sustainable transport.
The primary National Planning Policy objective for travel plans is outlined in the National Planning Policy Framework. This can be found under chapter 9 point 118.
