Travel packs
Applicants are responsible for funding and applying their own travel pack.
A travel pack is a small book. It provides useful travel information for residents and employees new to the city. This includes the location of bicycle shops close to the site and how they can be contacted.
Information for bus and rail travel is another important source of information. You can access this through:
- websites
- telephone numbers
- downloadable apps
When creating your travel pack, include:
- the telephone numbers of taxi firms
- a clear location of electric vehicle charging points and their distance to the site
In the interests of inclusivity, we would also expect to see the use of:
- colour
- images
- a range of font styles and sizes
ForwardMotion
ForwardMotion are based at the Council. They help individuals and partner organisations provide services that make alternative travel options more accessible.
Partner organisations include:
- businesses
- training providers
- schools
- colleges
- universities
The team also offer guidance on anything relating to cycling.
Other incentives
We would also expect to see a number of incentives to encourage the use of sustainable travel in Southend. Examples include voucher offers covering:
- free or discounted cycle repair kit
- a tabard and cycle lights
- discounts on other equipment (if it can be negotiated with the outlet)
- the purchase of a pedometer
- free membership to a car club and free driving hours (if applicable)
Further examples include:
- a free personal travel plan on request
- an incentive to encourage a high rate of return to annual travel surveys (e.g. prize draw)
Minimum travel pack requirements
A copy of both the travel plan and the travel pack must be made available for each unit either:
- prior to occupancy, or
- on the first working day for new employees
It must include:
- 4 x (paper based) travel cards for use on local buses valid for 2 weeks
- 4 x (paper based) season tickets for use on c2c or Greater Anglia train lines valid for 1 week
- free car club membership valid for one year if a car club is being provided by the development or it is conditioned (as part of the Section 106)
- ten car club driving hours for those eligible
