The tip
Temporary fridge and freezer disposal disruption
We are asking residents to delay disposing of unwanted fridges and freezers where possible due to a national shortage of specialist treatment facilities. Several processing sites across the UK have been taken out of operation, creating significant pressure on councils and waste contractors nationwide.
We have temporarily suspended bulky waste bookings for fridges and freezers.
Leigh Marshes Household Waste Recycling Centre is currently unable to accept fridges and freezers, but Stock Road HWRC remains open for these items. Where practical, residents are encouraged to continue using working appliances, explore repair, reuse or donation options, or ask retailers to collect old appliances when purchasing replacements. Please consider delaying disposal until national treatment capacity improves and only present appliances for disposal where it is necessary. Collection and disposal times may take longer than usual while this national issue continues. For more information visit recycling and waste news.
There can be traffic queues at times, particularly on Sundays so please avoid visiting on this day. Alternatively you can view the HWRC/Tip webcams either online (Stock Road or Leigh Marshes) or through the resident waste app to check how busy the site is.
Operating instructions will be in place at each site, please familiarise yourself with them before you visit:
- Only Southend-on-Sea residents can use this site
- ID must be shown for access, either a current Driving Licence or a recent council tax bill*. *NOTE: Driving Licence and Council Tax bill must be valid – The Driving Licence cannot be expired and the Council Tax bill must be for the year that access is sought. Driving licences that are expired or copies of Council Tax bills from previous years are not acceptable ID. The name on the Council Tax bill must match the name of any other ID presented. Access may be denied if non-acceptable ID is presented.
- children are not allowed out of vehicles on site for safety reasons.
- for your safety vehicle and visitor numbers are restricted within the site. Please be patient until you are permitted to enter
- use the marked-out parking spaces only and marked-out waiting points in the site
- only one person on steps or gantry (platform) at any one time (or two from the same household/vehicle if depositing a bulky item). Please wait at the marked waiting points if the steps/gantry are being used
- please deposit your items quickly and exit the site - others will be waiting to be allowed on-site
- we ask residents to separate furniture that may contain POPs into a different container. POPs are usually found in recovered furniture like sofas and armchairs. If visiting the tip, please follow instructions of on-site staff. More information on POPs can be found on our POPspage
- entry onto the site by foot is not permitted
There is a Havens Hospices Reuse shop based on-site at Stock Rd HWRC and a drop-off point for good quality donation items is also available at the Leigh Marshes HWRC.
Both sites allow residents to:
- dispose of bulky items
- recycle a wide range of household waste
View our Re-Use page for info on where you can dispose of good quality items.
Both sites have CCTV cameras and ANPR, which is Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
These are used to:
- view the amount of visits by all vehicles
- find illegal business waste
- stop crime
Please note:
- asbestos is not accepted at the tips or in our kerbside collection services
It has to be disposed of by a specialist contractor as it is hazardous waste that needs specialist collection and disposal - gas cylinders and tyres cannot be accepted at either tip
