Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC)

Sites closed until further notice

In response to the Coronavirus outbreak, Household Waste and Recycling Centres will remain closed until further notice.

Do not dump your waste

Do not leave your recycling or waste at the site entrances or on the street - this will be treated as fly tipping and you may be prosecuted.

Do take your waste home with you

Take your recycling and waste home and store it securely until restrictions on non-essential travel are lifted.

Do follow UK Government Guidance

Keep up to date with UK Government guidance by visiting their website.

How do I manage my bins if I'm told I have to stay at home?

Please see our Bins and Coronavirus page for information about your bins and collections.

Veolia have two HWRC’s (tips) in Southend.

Both sites allow residents to:

  • dispose of bulky items
  • recycle a wide range of household waste

In the summer, both sites have an average of 30,200 visitors every month. This is around 7,500 visitors every week.

You can find the best time to visit by looking at the webcam on Veolia’s website. Please wait for the page to load.

View our Re Use page for info on where you can dispose of good quality items.

Both sites have CCTV cameras and ANPR, which is Automatic Number Plate Recognition.
These are used to:

  • view the amount of visits by all vehicles
  • find illegal business waste
  • stop crime

Please note:

  • commercial type vehicles can only use the HWRCs between 12 and 4pm on Sundays
  • asbestos is not accepted at the HWRCs or in our kerbside collection services
It has to be disposed of by a specialist contractor as it is hazardous waste that needs specialist collection and disposal
  • gas cylinders and tyres cannot be accepted at either HWRC

See the Veolia website for more info about the HWRCs
